Your Trusted Partner in Diagnostic Care

Providing our doctors with accurate results, rapid turn-around times and personalised diagnoses for their patients.

Rapid Turnaround Time

We offer 24-48 hours for routine testing, same-day testing for urgent specimens depending when the sample arrives at the lab to facilitate swift and informed decision making for you and your patients.

Collaborative Meetings

Our industry-wide collaboration, facilitated through both in-person and remote multidisciplinary team meetings (MDT), alongside internal peer reviews conducted daily within Histopath, optimises patient care to the highest standards.

Equitable Patient Access

All patients deserve high quality health care, so we offer NO GAP and BULK BILLING rates to ensure everyone can access essential histopathology, microbiology, virology and biochemistry services.

Expert Pathologists

Our pathologists encourage direct communication and discussion with our referrers. Many hold senior academic positions with University appointeeships and regularly undertake continuing medical education to ensure they stay at the forefront of their field.

Improving Diagnostic Outcomes for the Future

We’re pioneering advances in digital reporting, automation and artificial intelligence that will revolutionise how we diagnose and report disease.

Digital Reporting

Histopath is the first laboratory in Australia to wholly integrate digital pathology into our routine workflow, enabling the necessary speed and accuracy for high-quality diagnosis. It’s particularly valuable for highly complex cases such as rare cancers and lymphomas, allowing sharing and co-reporting across Histopath’s pathologist network of expert groups.

Digital Reporting
AI Integration

We’re developing, training and validating AI-powered solutions that improve the detection and grading of cancer, as well as a broad range of diagnostic features in multiple tissue types. Beyond, it will enable highly accurate quantification, pattern recognition, and predictive analysis to improve our lab efficiency. This progressive approach holds immense promise for personalised treatment strategies.

AI
Integration
Automations & Robotics

We’re taking strides to automate our laboratory process, shifting human resources away from manual tasks to focus on quality and precision. It means tissue sections will be uniformly standardised – removing variability, improving our quality of testing and ultimately patient safety.

Automations & Robotics

Our advanced image capture tech generates detailed 3D images of surgical tissue, precisely delineating sectioning areas and tumour status. Pathologists can view specimens in a 3D plane, enabling mixed-media pathology reports for comparable real-life inspection. This will be integrated into our LIMS soon, enhancing comprehensive pathology reporting, documentation and education.

Special Stains

  • Enhanced visualisation refers to the special stain's ability to reveal specific tissue components or cellular structures.
  • Enhanced differential diagnoses to distinguish between similar looking cell types or structures such as microorganisms, connective tissue fibres or pigments. This helps to differentiate various disease processes and narrow down the potential diagnoses.
  • Subcellular detail in certain structures, such as mitochondria or Golgi apparatus, enabling pathologists to study cellular organisation and functions in greater detail.
  • Disease-specific markers can provide valuable information about the presence, distribution and characteristics of specific cellular components or pathological changes, such as markers for breast cancer, Helicobacter pylori and melanoma.

Specialised Immunohistochemical (IHC) staining

  • Precise identification of cellular expression and localisation to distinguish between different tumour subtypes, identify specific cell types or lineages and determine the presence or absence of specific molecular markers associated with particular disease entities.
  • Predictive and Prognostic Indicators for certain diseases to help assess the aggressiveness of a tumour or help predict your patient's response to targeted therapies.

  • Subtyping and Classification of tumours based on their molecular profiles and specific markers, such as hormone receptors or genetic mutations.

  • Detection of Infectious Agents such as bacteria, viruses or fungi within tissue samples.

Our Microbiology Gastrointestinal Services

Bacteriology

Our bacteriology services provide comprehensive testing on gastrointestinal pathogens on faecal specimens and gastric biopsies.

Detection in Faecal Specimens

What can we detect?

Enteric bacteria testing in faecal specimens include:

  • Aeromonas spp.
  • Campylobacter spp.
  • Clostridium difficile
  • Helicobacter pylori - Learn about the advantages of Helicobacter pylori PCR faecal testing here.
  • Plesiomonas spp.
  • Salmonella spp.
  • Shigella spp.
  • Vibrio spp.
  • Yersinia spp.

Additional tests are added on if:

  • travellers' diarrhoea
  • immunocompromised individuals
How do we do it?

With a combination of culture methods and molecular based methods utalising PCR.

Rapid detection of Helicobacter pylori is done by PCR method on faecal samples.
Helicobacter pylori PCR includes clarithromycin antibiotic resistance testing, which can predict if the organism will be resistant.

Bulk billing and Health fund, NO GAP billing is available for all tests on eligible patients.

Detection in Gastric Biopsy Specimens

What can we detect?

Helicobacter pylori culture and sensitivities on fresh gastric biopsies for diagnosis and antibiotic sensitivities.

The following antibiotic sensitivities are tested.
Amoxicillin
Levofloxacin
Clarithromycin
Tetracycline
Metronidazole
Rifampicin, upon request

What can we detect?

With a combination of PCR and culture our laboratory scientists provide you with results within.

Bulk billing and Health fund, NO GAP billing is available for all tests on eligible patients.

Our Microbiology Gastrointestinal Services

Specimen collection information

Inpatient Collection
SAF* jars are provided for all patients that undergo colonoscopy procedures to allow collection of faecal samples to help preserve any parasites collected during the procedures. The medical centres can request for these in-patient kits from the laboratory.

Outpatient/Self-collection
Dedicated self-collection kits with SAF* fixative in them can be provided for 3-day specimen collection. This allows the capture of the whole parasite lifecycle for delivering the most reliable results.

*Sodium acetate, Acetic Acid and Formaldehyde (SAF) is a fixative that prevents the degradation of parasites allowing for accurate and reliable diagnosis.

Our Microbiology Gastrointestinal Services

Virology

Virology add-ons are available upon request or as add-ons based on the clinical history of the patient.

Our expertise extends beyond histopathology, so that when you partner with us, you have access to a comprehensive range of diagnostic services.

Detection in Small Bowel and Duodenal Biopsies

Intestinal Disaccharidases testing - Measures levels of sucrase, maltase, lactase enzymes from fresh small bowel and duodenal biopsies. This test is  informative for detection of disaccharidase deficiency, lactose intolerance and coeliac diagnosis alongside histopathology diagnosis.

How do we do it?

Performed on small bowel and duodenal biopsies collected during surgeries.
Results are reported and correlated with the samples sent for histopathology.

Specimen Collection Information

Small bowel and duodenal biopsies collected during surgeries have to be kept frozen between the time of collection and testing.
